Frieze Week Picks
With 160 top galleries from 30 countries clamoring for attention under one roof in Regent’s Park, this year’s edition of Frieze London might send even the most hard-headed art lover crazy.
Outside of Frieze and their younger sibling Frieze Masters, established and young cutting-edge galleries and fairs are providing a breath of fresh air.
Here are our top openings this week, just in time for the weekend.
1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair - Until Sunday 18 October 2015 at Somerset House
Head to three of the grand wings of Somerset House to see 33 galleries and five special projects dealing in African art. This is the third edition of 1:54 and the largest yet. Don’t miss El Anatsui’s huge wall piece, Fresh and Fading Memories, Part V (2007), greeting visitors to 1:54 in the West Wing and Hassan Hajjaj’s 1:54 Lounge.
Soaring Flight: Peter Lanyon’s Gliding Paintings - Until January 17 2016 at The Courtauld Gallery
Visit this compact yet powerful display at the Courtauld Gallery of Peter Lanyon’s ‘gliding’ paintings. Showcasing large near-abstract works and constructions by the late artist inspired by his experiences while flying over his native Cornwall.
Lee Miller: A Woman’s War - Until 24 April 2016 at The Imperial War Museum
This new exhibition explores the impact of the Second World War on women's lives through the photography of Lee Miller, one of the most important female war photographers of the 20th century.
Enough About You by Einat Amir - Until Sunday 18 October 2015 at TRIAD Gallery, Field St.
Londoners, it’s time to get up close and personal. Dedicated to the analysis of human behaviour Enough About You, a participatory performance and installation by Jerusalem-based artist Einat Amir, explores relationships in their most organic state challenging our screen-dominant culture to converse with a stranger in a booth.
Moniker Art Fair - Until Sunday 18 October 2015 at Old Truman Brewery
Shoreditch's response to Frieze is Moniker, which takes place at the Old Truman Brewery alongside The Other Art Fair and draws from the area's vibrant urban art scene. There will be talks, street art tours, live murals and DJ sessions throughout the weekend.

Hyundai’s inaugural commission in the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall by Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas is a must-see, as is Goya: The Portraits at the National Gallery. Damien Hirst realises his long-term ambition as curator of his expansive collection at his recently opened Newport Street Gallery, while Gagosian’s new high-tech space in Mayfair shows Cy Twombly.
